When Maia Shoecraft was diagnosed with cerebral palsy as a toddler in a small rural town, her mum went back to university to help her.
When Heidi Shoecraft 's daughter Maia was just a baby doctors told her she would have limited movement.
The allied health profession develops exercise plans for people with acute or chronic medical conditions, injuries or disabilities."I kept at it, and I think that it's also taught me a lot about cerebral palsy and other disabilities," she said.Maia underwent a major surgery in 2021 to lengthen her calf muscles, to make it easier for her to walk.
"On Wednesdays, it might just be running and then Thursday the same as Tuesday, and Friday is just touch footy."Not only has all that activity improved her mobility, it has helped Maia to become a national champion runner in her multi-class category. "We don't have a physio full-time... so Heidi's got to step up and take on a pseudo-physio role at the moment," Dr Chater said.
