One day, Grohl picked up an old guitar and started playing. That’s when he realized he could learn songs by ear. Grohl recalls eating an apple when Cobain and Novoselic picked him up at the airport for their first meeting. Grohl begins the chapter about Cobain’s suicide — the most difficult part of the book to write — with the words, “He’s gone, Dave.”
