ABC Chair Kim Williams and outgoing managing director David Anderson had a “difference of opinion” over Mr Anderson’s decision to air a controversial episode of Four Corners, an insider has claimed.
An insider at the ABC has revealed a “dispute” between Chair Kim Williams and Managing Director David Anderson in the weeks leading up to Mr Anderson’s shock resignation.
Reportedly, Mr Williams did not feel the episode met the ABC’s quality standards while Mr Anderson “got the call” and opted to broadcast the investigation. “As editor-in-chief, David’s got the call, and that would have frustrated the s*** out of Kim,” an unnamed source inside the national broadcaster“ was really underwhelmed by the approach to that program – it wasn’t even-handed, and not up to the standards that Four Corners has set itself. As ABC Chair, Mr Williams is responsible for overseeing the broadcaster’s board, meeting with government and serving as the ABC’s public face.
However, the same ABC source told The Australian that Mr Williams had taken an increasingly “hands-on” approach to his chairmanship, which rattled top brass within the public broadcaster.
