The use of celebrity images in scams is becoming increasingly common, with scammers utilizing artificial intelligence (AI) to create deepfakes. These deepfakes can be generated from just a few seconds of audio or an image, allowing scammers to impersonate well-known figures or everyday people. AI-powered scams are prevalent enough to be featured in NAB's warning of five scams to watch out for in 2025.
Beloved former Sunrise host David Koch was shocked to learn his photo had been used in an unauthorised online advertisement trying to scam people out of their hard-earned money. An image of Koch, a financial expert turned TV presenter, was used to give an appearance of credibility to the scam. It fooled victim Allison, who lost $250,000 when she invested in what she believed to be a reputable company.
Phishing scams Phishing continues to be a favorite tactic for criminals. Last year, WA Police cracked a major cyber criminal network that allegedly duped victims out of more than $350,000 through a sophisticated SMS phishing scam. The scammers impersonated banks, tricking victims into revealing their online logins, credit card details, and passwords.
