When I took up my column in the Glasgow Times, I made a promise to myself that I wouldn’t pull any punches and that I would always be honest with our readers – even if it annoyed the odd SNP press officer from time-to-time.
Infuriating because the biggest issue people face right now is the cost-of-living crisis and sky high energy bills and I want my colleagues to be talking about that. When people tune into Reporting Scotland at 6.30pm each night, let’s be honest - they probably don’t really want to see politicians on theirscreens. And if they have to see politicians at all, then they want them to reflect their priorities and concerns. Right now, that’s the cost of living crisis.
Therefore, how the SNP respond to recent events, especially over the coming weeks, will be pivotal. As I see it, there are two options for us and the party stands at a fork in the road - we turn in on ourselves and indulge with internal party navel gazing or we focus on what really matters most to people – the cost of living crisis.
Ministers in Whitehall should also take steps to reduce the cost of living by addressing the underlying causes of rising prices. This would include measures to reduce energy bills, such as promoting the use of renewable energy sources, as well as addressing the issue of monopolies in sectors such as energy and transport., and affordable housing – like the new site opening I attended in St Mark’s, Shettleston last week.
