David O Russell’s latest features great performances from Margot Robbie, Christian Bale and John David Washington, but they can’t save it from a convoluted plot and jarring tone ⭐⭐⭐ 🟠 GeoffreyMacnab
The film is full of eccentric and entertaining character performances, but Russell is so busy providing funny shtick for his all-star cast that the tension quickly seeps out of the story. We see a lot of blood and guts. In one memorable scene, a character is pushed into the path of an oncoming vehicle and squashed and dismembered in very satisfactory fashion. Even this is treated as a bit of a lark.
In its final reel, the film suddenly becomes more earnest. Democracy is at risk and speeches are made about the threat to the American way of life. Even here, you half suspect the storytelling is still tongue-in-cheek. Russell shows Dutch courage in tackling his story in such an offbeat fashion. The actors certainly look as if they’re enjoying themselves and the cinematography and production design are immaculate. In the end, though,
