Peralta played for Team Venezuela and called the experience “one of the top highlights of my career.” He rejoined the Dodgers for Monday’s Cactus League game.
GLENDALE, Ariz. — The excitement of the World Baseball Classic has been winning over fans.“It was an unbelievable experience,” said Peralta, the Dodgers outfielder who helped Team Venezuela reach the quarterfinals before“I’ve never been a part of this event. It was my first time – and totally worth it. I was having the time of my life. I was telling my teammates, ‘I’ve never been a part of an All-Star team. It’s always been my goal. Never got the opportunity.’ But for me, that was it.
Signed to a one-year, $6.5 million contract just as spring training began, Peralta is expected to be the left-handed half of a platoon in left field. He is coming off of back-to-back down years, including a 2022 season that featured a midseason trade from the Arizona Diamondbacks to the Tampa Bay Rays – a move he admitted “got me emotional” – and back surgery following the season.
“I had two options. I could just treat it and the inflammation and everything was going to go down. But the injury is going to be there even still. I wanted to be honest with me. I wanted to be honest with the team . I could, ‘Oh, I’m going to hide it.’ No. That’s not the way I am. I’m a team player. I want to help the team win. So I just said, ‘You know what – I’m going to get it fixed and that way I’m going to be good for the rest of the season.
“We’re trying to evaluate it right now and see where we’re at,” he said Monday. “We haven’t really made any decisions on what the next step is, just trying to map some stuff out and see what’s going on.
