David Spade talks about 'SNL' and his podcast with Dana Carvey ahead of Majestic Theatre show
They started in January and already have racked up more than 40 episodes. Their first guest was Chris Rock, followed by such late-night luminaries as Tina Fey, Laraine Newman, Tim Meadows, Adam Sandler and John Mulaney. They’ve talked to writers and hosts as well as cast members. And they’ll soon add musical acts into the mix, he said.
Spade had wanted to do a podcast for a long time -- “It’s sort-of mandatory to do a podcast when you’re a comedian” -- but didn’t know how to launch one or what shape it should take. He partnered with Carvey because they have fun chatting over dinner, and he thought that kind of energy would make for a good show.
David Spade, center, spent 10 years on"Saturday Night Alive." He and fellow alumnus Dana Carvey talk about the show in their podcast"Fly on the Wall." Among the sketches Spade appeared in was the famous Matt Foley bit which also co-starred Christina Applegate. They just had a significant get with a two-parter featuring their old boss, “SNL” creator and producer Lorne Michaels.
“Lorne was really interesting to talk to,” Spade said. “We have dinners maybe once a year when I go out there. He’s a good hang and he laughs, and he loves comedy. He was saying he can’t imagine a point in his life when he wouldn’t be around comedy. If he retired, it would be hard to not be around funny people.”
Spade was nearing the end of his time on"Saturday Night Live" when he did his first special, “Take the Hit," followed by"My Fake Problems" in 2014. In his new one, he talks about anxiety, hosting"The Bachelor in Paradise" and intentionally mispronouncing things when ordering in fancy restaurants.
