Former South Australian Liberal leader David Speirs has not held back in his assessment both of his successor's fledgling leadership and his party's chances at the next state election, saying there is a 'level of shambolic-ness about what's going on'.
David Speirs , who resigned from the top job in SA Liberals, has given a frank assessment of the party's chances at the 2026 state election.Former South Australia n Liberal leader David Speirs has described the challenge confronting his party ahead of the next state election as "more of a Mount Everest than a Mount Lofty", and says he fears the opposition could "go backwards" at the 2026 poll.
"It does appear to be a level of shambolic-ness — I'm not sure if that's a word — but if it is, shambolic-ness about what's going on in the Liberal Party," Mr Speirs said, when discussing the transition to Mr Tarzia. "I was able to grab hold of this party, post the 2022 election, and by-and-large keep it fairly unified, build our values, move our party on from that defeat."I think it's more Mount Everest than Mount Lofty — there's a very significant journey ahead for Vincent as leader, but there was for me too."Mr Speirs has committed to remaining in the Liberal Party, but he has not decided if he'll contest the next state election.
"It's not necessarily about Vincent, it's about the culture of the Liberal Party, they're broken, they can't unify around one person."Mr Tarzia's deputy leader, John Gardner, said the Liberals remained a united team focused on holding the government to account.
