David Tennant knows better than to fuel the rumors about his potential DoctorWho return and instead offers up a great response to the idea: 'Whatever I say will become whatever the Internet wants it to be.'
David Tennant responds to Doctor Who return rumors with a humorous take. Tennant's five-year run as the Tenth Doctor marked an extremely popular period for the beloved show, and he remains one of the most well-loved incarnations of the Time Lord. Matt Smith replaced Tennant and was introduced as the Eleventh Doctor in"The End of Time" in 2010, but Tennant later reprised his role in 2013 for the 50th anniversary special"The Day of the Doctor".
Rumors of Tennant returning to portray the Doctor yet again began when the character's current performer, Jodie Whittaker, announced that she would be leaving the show. Whittaker made history as the first woman to carry the Doctor's mantle, but she will be stepping down as the Thirteenth Doctor after releasing three series specials this year.
"I’ve been asked a version of this question for the last 20 years — [Laughs] — and I’ve learned through bitter experience that there’s not any point in even answering it because whatever I say is spun by whoever wants to hear it. So there’s no point in me denying it, there’s no point in me confirming it, there’s no point in me fudging it. Whatever I say will become whatever the Internet wants it to be.
While Tennant makes some excellent points with his non-answer, there are a few factors supporting those who think Tennant will return to Doctor Who. Most notably, Russell T. Davies' return as showrunner after Whittaker's departure lines up with Doctor Who's 60th anniversary. Considering Tennant returned for the show's 50th, his appearance for the latest anniversary does not seem far-fetched.
Still, whatever arguments can be made on either side, Tennant is remaining neutral with his humorous answer. Tennant knows all too well that he will be fielding Doctor Who return questions for the rest of his career, and he's clearly decided to have some fun with it. The debates online will continue until either an official announcement is made or Whittaker's Doctor regenerates in the third Doctor Who special. Until then, all Doctor Who fans can do is speculate.
