Sea water flooding through broken infrastructure this month could be the cause or a factor, authorities say

Fish have died and worrying algal blooms have been found in water at Glasson Marina near Lancaster, after problems with high tide floods, a broken canal lock and a broken sea gate at adjoining troubled sea port.

At Glasson near the River Lune estuary and Irish Sea, there have been two significant port and marina infrastructure problems and some calls for change. One problem is a broken tidal sea gate at Glasson Dock, meaning tides can flow in and out uncontrolled. The second problem is a connecting canal lock at Glasson Marina. It has two lock gates and one has been leaking water for months.

nfIrastructure, property, land, canal and sea responsibilities across the Glasson area involve multiple organisations. Now the Environment Agency for Cumbria and Lancashire and Lancaster City Council have issued more information about sea defences and fish deaths. The agency confirmed recent attempts to fix the broken hydraulic sea gate were unsuccessful. Further work is expected to take 14 weeks.
