State officials are encouraging Western Alaska residents who saw damage from this September’s powerful storm to file claims before a deadline early next week.
Family camps and subsistence cabins lay in ruins, shifted off their pads, floated away, and buried in sand along the Nome-Council Road in the days after a significant storm hit stretches of western Alaska, in Nome, Alaska September 19, 2022.
“It is critical that individuals and families in the affected area register for State of Alaska Individual Assistance and other federal assistance before the deadlines,” said Bryan Fisher, director of the state’s Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Management. “If a resident has property, like a fish camp, but can’t access the property to determine damages, we encourage them to start an application. We can always amend an application after the state deadline, but we cannot start a new one,” Fisher said.
