For coaches, is staying at a lower-level school with easier access to the College Football Playoff smarter than jumping to a Power 5 team? Andy_Staples on the jobs that will become more desirable in the new era — and those that won't.
The RSNs are a classic pigs-get-fat-hogs-get-slaughtered situation. For years, if you lived in a large metro area, you probably slid some RSN $4 or $5 a month whether you cared about the team it broadcasted or not. RSNs were far and away the most expensive non-ESPN channels in the cable bundle even though they probably only appealed to about 20 percent of the subscriber base at a given time.
RSNs were charging between $3 and $7.50 a month without anywhere near the value. Those numbers were sustainable during peak cable, but they became albatrosses once customers began to understand how their cable bills worked and distributors adjusted accordingly. If you live in Phoenix but don’t care about watching every Suns, Coyotes or Diamondbacks game, then you have no need to pay the more than $7 Bally Sports Arizona charges.
In terms of whether this will affect rights fees in general, it might. But college sports are somewhat insulated because most of the leagues deal with ESPN or Fox. Those companies have not charged completely obscene monthly fees for the conference networks they administer, and they also protect those networks by making them part of a bundle with wide-ranging appeal. ESPN’s ACC and SEC networks and Fox’s Big Ten Network remain below $2 per month per subscriber in the conference footprints.
Meanwhile, Disney can protect the ACC Network or SEC Network by saying this to distributors: “Oh, you don’t want the ACC Network? Cool. You also don’t get ESPN or the Disney Channel.” Fox can say this: “Oh, you don’t want the Big Ten Network? Cool. You won’t be getting Fox News, either.” This relationship should allow college sports media rights deals to go on undisturbed into the near future. By the time the SEC or ACC deals are up, distribution may have changed entirely. But the RSN situation probably will have no bearing on this round of deals.Kirkwood has asked me to rank the best movies that have won the Best Picture Academy Award. These are my favorites, and I make this list fully aware that a professional film critic would disagree vehemently.
