A new BBC four-part series had already been announced with James Graham returning as writer and Joseph Fiennes reprising his uncanny role playing Gareth Southgate.

James Graham accepted an award for best new play at the Olivier AwardsThe writer of Dear England will begin adapting the sell out West End play for a BBC series, he announced last night after winning an Olivier Award.

'But we know that Joe is going to reprise his role to Gareth Southgate and that is absolutely vital because no one else on earth could play him like Joe.' A synopsis for the play read: 'It's time to change the game. The country that gave the world football has since delivered a painful pattern of loss. Why can't England's men win at their own game?

'Something has gone wrong in England and with England, something that will take more than a sticking plaster to fix,' says Southgate at the beginning of the play. 'The experience of working on This House at the National Theatre 10 years ago changed my life as an emerging writer. He was also joined on stage by actors in football kits for the play about the pressures of penalties and is inspired by Gareth's journey since his infamous penalty miss for England in 1996.
