“This team looks hungry, you’re young, you’re ready to go.” Ahead of the USMNT's match against the Netherlands, The Athletic commissioned letters to the team from fans old and new, well-known and otherwise. Enjoy.
games sitting side-by-side with their U-16 teams. This made for lots of trash talk and intense moments. Everyone was engaged and into each of the USA games, which made it an amazing experience. I know where I will be at 10 a.m. ET on Saturday.I am not a diehard soccer fan but its always fun to watch an underdog US team play well! It brings the country together. That is something our country needs! Sports has a good way of bringing communities together.
You’re in the knockouts now. Goal number one is just to get out of the group, not necessarily to win every game. Getting out of the group is more strategic. You have three games to plan with people’s health, fatigue, injuries. Once you get to the knockout rounds, you leave everything. There’s no future — it’s just, at all costs, win this game and then reset if you get by. Look where you are. There’s no planning for the future. Whatever we need to do to win this game, that’s what we’ll do.
The difference now is that such aspirations are centered on a young team, many of whom play for some of the fabled clubs on the planet. It’s no longer stop-the-presses news when our best young players feature in England, Germany, Italy or Spain. There is depth, class and advanced skill. The arguments and questions that swirl about our team are the ones any proper ‘footballing nation’ should have. That’s a good thing.
On Tuesday I was attempting to stream the US win-or-go-home match against Iran, losing signal between each station and trying to catch up on the action when I arrived home. This Saturday I’m looking forward to being able to focus on the game and watch it in a bar with friends, reviving that summer energy that I usually associate with World Cup soccer. I’ll be honest: my expectations for team USA started out not that high, but that has changed. Your play has changed it.
This Saturday at 10 a.m. can not come any closer for any American soccer fan, especially myself as I think that as a unit, “we believe that we can win!”When I was younger I didn’t fully understand the hard work, and effort that the teams needed to play at the World Cup; I just saw it as another boring sport that I could not comprehend.
