It was great for day tripping, but it will no longer exist
A long-running Sunday train service which takes Lancashire visitors to the Yorkshire Dales and Cumbria is being cancelled this summer, sparking fears for the future.
“But one of the issues is unreliability of train services on the west of the Pennines. Train drivers on the west have to volunteer to work Sunday Dales Rail services. Sunday is a day of rest for drivers on the west side, we understand. And Northern wants to avoid the need to cancel trains. Travel Watch North West is chaired by David Butterworth of Clitheroe. He was secretary of Ribble Valley Rail, which successfully campaigned for the re-introduction in 1994 of passenger trains on the Ribble Valley line. The groups have written to Northern Trains, calling for Lancashire Dales Rail services to be reinstated next year and for long-term rail development.
The joint letter mentions former government minister Michael Portillo, then Rail Transport Minister, who encouraged all interested parties in the late 1980s to work together to ensure that the Settle-Carlisle line had a successful future and the case for closure would not re-emerge. “In making this decision, along with our other timetable changes elsewhere on the network, we’ve also had to make sure our overall timetable supports long-term value for a sustainable future, given rail industry cost challenges. We are working with stakeholders on proposals to resume Dales Rail in 2024.”
