It is almost 80 years since a British King stepped foot on Northern Irish soil
Northern Ireland will host the King next week at Hillsborough Castle on his tour of the UK following the death of the Queen on Thursday.
Her first solo public engagement took place on April 21, 1942, her sixteenth birthday, when as Princess Elizabeth, she inspected the Grenadier Guards at Windsor Castle. Her last official engagement was Tuesday, September 6 when she welcomed Liz Truss in Balmoral castle and invited her to form a government.
What happens at the Accession Council? The Accession Council is a special meeting of the Privy Council and will be summoned as soon as possible following the death of the queen. They have two meetings. Over time the Queen had taken on the responsibility of supporting those family members from her Privy Purse. This was funded principally from the revenues of the Duchy of Lancaster, until only the annuity for her husband, Prince Philip, remained. His death in 2021 meant that there are now no surviving Parliamentary annuities.
Prince William will though become Duke of Cornwall, because that title is heritable, and he will inherit the Duchy of Cornwall under the Duchy’s charter of 1337.
