Thousands remain unaccounted for and 11 are dead following the largest natural disaster to hit New Zealand this century.
Parts of the North Island were devastated by the freak weather event last week with almost 30,000 homes still without electricity, impacting communication lines.
“Countless others have been displaced. Tragically 11 people have lost their lives and more fatalities remain possible. “The stress and strain of the past week is clearly starting to show, particularly in areas where power and communications remain disrupted. A National State of Emergency was declared last Tuesday, only the third time in New Zealand’s history it has been enacted.
