BREAKING: The death toll in Sri Lanka continues to rise after fresh explosions in greater Colombo, according to multiple reports. 9News

The senior official told Associated Press he suspects the blasts were carried out by suicide bombers. The official spoke on condition of anonymity as he was not authorised to speak with reporters.Witness Alex Agileson who was in the vicinity of St Anthony's Shrine says buildings in the surrounding area shook with the blast. The three hotels hit were the Shangri-La Colombo, Kingsbury Hotel and Cinnamon Grand Colombo. It was unclear whether there were any casualties in the hotels.

There were no immediate claims of responsibility for the attacks in a country which was at war for decades with Tamil separatists until 2009 during which bomb blasts in the capital were common. Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison has condemned what he called "devastating & horrific Easter terrorist attacks" on Twitter.

"Our heart goes out to those Christians and all those others innocents who have been slaughtered today in this horrific terrorist attack."
