Officials defined a heat period as days when a level-3 heat health alert was issued, or days when the mean central heat period was greater than 20°C.: “We do see that during heat periods, these peaks where we are seeing excess mortality are then followed by troughs which are below expected.
Ms Caul said the most common cause of deaths during the heat periods was dementia and Alzheimer’s, and it could be that some people, especially those who were older, died a few days or weeks earlier than expected, she said. There were more deaths from females than from males in four of the five heat-periods, though it is not yet clear why that is, Ms Caul said.
