The Bay to Birdwood celebrates its 40th anniversary this weekend, but according to one of the event's stalwarts, its roots lay in an unofficial parade led by former premier Don Dunstan.

The Bay to Birdwood historic vehicle run celebrates its 40th anniversary this weekend, but according to one of the event's stalwarts, its roots lay in an unofficial parade led through the Adelaide Hills by former premier Don Dunstan.

It involved drivers of pre-1950s vehicles meeting at the seaside suburb of Glenelg, known as the Bay, before driving more than 70 kilometres to Birdwood in what would be a biennial event."I think I rode it in two or three Bay to Birdwoods. Museum director Paul Rees said today's BTB event included vehicles that had not even been manufactured when the event started in 1980.

"It's usually their first vehicle they drove in, or learnt to drive in, or more often the vehicle that was the family car. He said it was "fantastic" that there were a few "cats" around who had participated in every BTB since 1980, like Don Warner. The 2020 run will involve 1,250 vehicles departing from Barratt Reserve, West Beach.Mr Warner said the biggest change he had seen over his 40-year involvement were alternations to the sea-to-Birdwood route.
