The plan to use HMAS Stirling as a base upset some in Labor ranks and risks sparking a voter backlash and protests, especially in the surrounding Labor-held seats of Fremantle held by Josh Wilson and in Brand held by Resources Minister Madeleine King.Mr Wilson said he would not comment on speculation about the AUKUS agreement but pointed to his long record of opposition to nuclear power and proliferation of nuclear weapons.
It is understood the navy has invited local mayors and other members of the public to inspect one of its submarines at HMAS Stirling on Monday in what is seen by some as a move to shore up community support.
