New South Wales detectives have launched a homicide investigation after the grim discovery of the bodies of two women inside a south-western Sydney unit.

Police were called to an apartment block on Canterbury Rd, near Dibbs St, in Canterbury on Tuesday around 9:30am after a person flagged concerns about the whereabouts of the pair.

Picture: Damian ShawIt's believed a welfare report was made to the police by a building manager of the unit after he saw the build up of letters and parcels at the front door.

One resident who lived in the unit block described the area as"pretty tame" and added it was"pretty concerning" an incident like this happened in the same building.Forensic officers spent most of the day inside the apartment searching for clues. Picture: Damian Shaw
