The federal government has ordered online dating companies develop an industry code of practice to better protect users from sexual harassment and violence.

The online dating industry has been given a deadline of the middle of next year to implement the code of practice.

The move comes after the government held a National Roundtable on Online Dating Safety in January in response to concerns about sexual violence and harassment. The Australian Institute of Criminology released research last October which found three in four people using dating apps or websites experienced some form of sexual violence while using dating apps, in the five years to 2021.

"Dating apps are now the most common way to meet a partner in Australia, yet the level of violence experienced by users of these platforms is deeply concerning," Rowland said.

His comments come as cardiovascular disease remains the biggest killer of Australians. “We do see high rates still of obesity, diabetes, high blood pressure – these things continue to drive this epidemic of heart disease,” Professor Kovavic told Sky News Australia. He said there are some heart diseases which women suffer from more often than men, including ‘spontaneous coronary artery dissection’ and ‘fibromuscular dysplasia’. “Women don’t always get those classic symptoms of heart attack – it can be pain in the belly, it can be shortness of breath, it can be just fatigue, sometimes pain in the jaw, pain in the arms. “We have to be really vigilant for all of these different symptoms of heart attack and doctors I think also need to do a better job, but I think we are improving at recognising these symptoms of heart attack in women.”
