Athletes are vying for berths to the second step of track and field's playoffs, which will be held next week at Humble ISD's Turner Stadium.

Deer Park has a commanding lead in the girls division, enjoying a 113-45 advantage over Dobie, while it's slightly closer in the boys division. That's where the Deer have an 89-41 advantage over the Longhorns. Among the best achievements for Deer Park was junior Jacob Marichalar's pair of district titles in the throwing events. He began with a title in the shot put, using a heave of 48 feet, 11-and-a-half inches to defeat Pasadena Memorial's Swazi Gurnell and his effort of 46 feet, 9-and-a-quarter inches.
"I wanted to take it slow and easy in the beginning, making sure I got my mark and then let loose in the end," Marichalar said. Deer Park collected 36 additional points when the program finished 1-2 in the pole vault and high jump. In the pole vault, Donovan Wagers took the title with a vault of 10 feet and Daymon Saucier was next at 9-6. In the high jump, King Phillips secured first at six feet and Nick Buffalo claimed second at 5-10.
