Chief of the Defence Force Angus Campbell said leaked classified US intelligence that exposed dire details of Ukraine’s defences and damaging assessments of American allies could erode trust.

that exposed dire details of Ukraine’s defences and damaging assessments of American allies was “serious” and could harm trust among close countries, Australia’s top military commander warned.

A leak of US intelligence documents is “potentially damaging”, the head of Australia’s military Angus Campbell says.“The issue of maintaining security of information is critical to the development of national capability and to the trust and confidence across allies and partners,” General Campbell said in response to questions after a speech at the Lowy Institute.

“In circumstances such as this, this is potentially a damaging release of material. And it is something that I would in no way wish to encourage.”About 100 pages of US intelligence was released on a social media gaming platform last month but only gained a wider audience last week, prompting an FBI probe. There are concerns the leak emerged from within the US system, rather than being stolen by outside hackers.

The documents also included an assessment that Israel’s intelligence service Mossad was encouraging protests against Benjamin Netanyahu’s government, and details of discussions between South Korean officials over supplying arms to Ukraine. If true, the documents would suggest the US was spying on allies.
