Documents reveal Brisbane’s 160-year-old Victoria Barracks is unsafe and falling apart. Will the Defence Department remove the barbed wire and allow others to save it?

Brisbane’s Victoria Barracks on Petrie Terrace is unsafe and must be repurposed as an arts centre with boutique hotels and training centres, according to internal Defence Department advice.

The possible turning point for the barracks is revealed in a November 2022 heritage asset action plan obtained by this masthead under freedom of information laws. Victoria Barracks is a significant heritage asset for Brisbane and links the earliest days of the then-penal colony with Petrie Terrace’s emerging cultural centre.

The site includes a former armoury, barracks and grass tennis court, along the defunct Blackall Street that runs through the centre of the base. “New facilities could sensitively be built in the Old Store Precinct, the Blackall Street termination, the tennis court on Petrie Terrace and Swan Road and within the Barracks Precinct,” the documents state.
