Defence is not doing enough to address suicides, according to the Australian Defence Force Chief, who has told told the Royal Commission into Defence and Veteran Suicide the ADF has inconsistent data on such deaths among its members.
The inquiry heard of inconsistencies in the way defence and veteran suicides were recorded and reported to the ADF
The royal commission, which is holding hearings in Townsville this week, has so far heard from the Commander of the 3rd Brigade and two former ministers.General Campbell admitted Defence "was not getting it right" when it came addressing suicide. In his written submission, General Campbell said he became aware of suicides among the veteran community through "ad hoc and inconsistent mechanisms".
"If a person declines to engage with ESOs and is not registered with the Department of Veterans Affairs, then it will be an after-the-event awareness, if at all, at this stage," he said. The commission also heard there was conflicting data on the number of permanent ADF members who had died by suicide since 2000.
