Black belt Gerri Kissner, aka Ninja Nan, teaches free self-defence classes in her retirement to show women how to fight off would-be attackers.
Women in the Ninja Nan classes are learning how to disarm and distract attackers so they can escape harm safely.On a sleepy back street in a North Queensland town, energetic yelling can be heard coming from a dusty tin shed.Ms Simpson has successfully blocked the punch of 83-year-old karate black belt , Gerri Kissner .
Most of her students are retired and about half live alone. They say they do not feel as powerful because of their age. "I've gained the knowledge of how to protect myself if I'm being threatened, so it really has helped my confidence," she said.Ms Kissner has been running the free classes in Mackay and surrounding communities for 19 years but has seen an increase over the past two months.
