Rep. Ilhan Omar: Biden's restrictive new asylum rule “flies in the face of international law, U.S. law and basic morality. It will put the lives of countless asylum-seekers at risk.”

The rule is, “in word and deed, almost identical to Donald Trump’s ‘transit ban,’” Rep. Ilhan Omar said in a statement on Wednesday. “The policy flies in the face of international law, U.S. law and basic morality. It will put the lives of countless asylum-seekers at risk. By punishing the victims of decades of failed policy, it will do absolutely nothing to address the root causes of U.S. immigration.

Senators Bob Menendez , Cory Booker , Ben Ray Luján and Alex Padilla released a joint statement expressing their frustration with the rule. “We are deeply disappointed that the Biden Administration has chosen to move forward with publishing this proposed rule, which only perpetuates the harmful myth that asylum seekers are a threat to this nation,” the senators said. “In reality, they are pursuing a legal pathway in the United States. We have an obligation to protect vulnerable migrants under domestic and international law and should not leave vulnerable migrants stranded in countries unable to protect them.

“President Biden campaigned on restoring the soul of America, which includes restoring our asylum system.
