Elected officials from several small cities voiced frustration with the San Diego Association of Government's population-based voting system, as County Supervisor Nora Vargas takes over as board chair
Republicans representing more than half a dozen cities stormed out of a public hearing at SANDAG on Friday, after Democrat leaders voted to install two high-profile elected officials to oversee the agency.
In the run-up to Friday’s vote, Republicans, joined by Democrat Terry Gaasterland of Del Mar, voiced frustration with the agency’s voting system, which gives board members from larger jurisdictions more influence. Political control of the agency would be uncertain without this so-called weighted vote.
El Cajon Mayor Bill Wells made a substitute motion during the meeting to install Gaasterland as the SANDAG board chair. The motion failed, garnering the support of a majority of board members but only 24 percent of the weighted vote.
