Melbourne captain Max Gawn says Christian Petracca had both his and the club’s full support to take a break away in recent weeks while recovering from a ruptured spleen, despite reports suggesting the playing group was frustrated with him for it. The 28-year-old had been one of the Brownlow Medal favourites until having his season ended by a horrific blow to his internal organ that required emergency surgery and weeks spent in the Alfred Hospital’s intensive care unit.

Club says Petracca not going anywhere. Petracca is yet to deny circulating suggestions that he is disgruntled with the club and would seek a trade away from Melbourne were he not locked in to a long-term contract. But if there is tension between the two parties, Gawn says the feeling is not reciprocal. “I’m in open dialogue with Trac, I don’t see the build up that’s happened with Trac,” he said on Triple M. “He went away for 9-10 weeks — well, he went away for four, and then to Noosa.
