Denis Law, the iconic Scottish footballer who graced the pitch for Manchester United and achieved legendary status, passed away at the age of 81. Known for his extraordinary goal-scoring abilities and his role as part of the legendary 'Holy Trinity' alongside Bobby Charlton and George Best, Law left an indelible mark on the history of English football.

Denis Law, the only Scottish player to win the Ballon d'Or, passed away at the age of 81. The news was announced by his family in a statement released by Manchester United late Friday night (AEDT). Law had been diagnosed with dementia in 2021 and had been battling the disease for several years. 'It is with a heavy heart that we tell you our father Denis Law has sadly passed away. He fought a tough battle but finally he is now at peace,' the statement read.

'We would like to thank everyone who contributed to his wellbeing and care, past and much more recently. We know how much people supported and loved him and that love was always appreciated and made the difference.' Law is forever linked with Bobby Charlton and George Best, forming the legendary 'Holy Trinity' that led Manchester United to English League titles in 1965 and 1967, and the European Cup in 1968. 'Everyone at Manchester United is mourning the loss of Denis Law, the King of the Stretford End,' United said in a statement. 'With 237 goals in 404 appearances, he will always be celebrated as one of the club's greatest and most beloved players. The ultimate goal-scorer, his flair, spirit and love for the game made him the hero of a generation.' Law, Charlton, and Best were voted European footballer of the year and won the Ballon d'Or in a five-season period from 1964-68. They are immortalized together in a statue at Old Trafford. Law's 46 goals in the 1963-64 season remains a single-season record for United. His 237 goals for the club are bettered by only Charlton and Wayne Rooney. Though Law is best remembered for his time at United, he also had two spells at Manchester City, where he scored a memorable, albeit controversial, goal against his former club in 1974. His late goal, scored with a audacious back-heel flick, led to a 1-0 victory and contributed to United's relegation to the second division. Law chose not to celebrate the goal and was substituted with head bowed as United fans invaded the pitch. Law held Scotland's scoring record with 30 goals, a feat matched only by Kenny Dalglish. Despite his success, Law had a challenging start to his career. He left his hometown of Aberdeen at the age of 15, with poor eyesight, and faced considerable obstacles in his journey to becoming a football legend. After retiring from professional football, Law worked as a TV soccer pundit and presenter and remained a prominent figure in the sporting world. He lent his support to charity work and was awarded a Commander of the British Empire by Queen Elizabeth II in 2016 for his contributions to both football and philanthropy.
