Frederik, 56, and Mary, 52, ascended the throne as King and Queen in January 2024 following the surprise abdication of Frederik’s mother Queen Margrethe on New Year’s Eve 2023. The shock abdication saw the Hobart-born royal become the first Australian Queen of any European monarchy and came just months after Frederik was embroiled in Exactly one year later, Frederik acknowledged the big change as he spoke to the Danish people during the 18-minute address, which was recorded at the family’s residence at Amalienborg Palace.
