Retired Perth dentist Richard Slattery gets a kick out of helping former addicts smile again, boost their confidence, and secure jobs — all through getting their teeth fixed.

abc.net.au/news/pro-bono-perth-retired-dentist-helping-former-addicts-recovery/102662118Retired Perth dentist Richard Slattery has seen the devastating impact drug and alcohol addiction can have on dental hygiene and teeth.

"Most of the addictive drugs do have effects one way or the other, like decaying, and often it's very difficult to save what's left.Dr Slattery offers his services pro bono to clients at Palmerston drug and alcohol treatment program who want to set their lives on a new path, but who often find their confidence rocked by the tell-tale signs of addiction including chronic dental issues.

"Particularly if they've been to prison, they can have teeth missing due to violence — and they just can't even walk into a shop and smile."And so, part of the recovery is really about being able to look at someone and talk to them without feeling ashamed. One Palmerston rehabilitation program participant, who did not want to be identified, says improved dental health has helped them plan their future after addiction."Then I can be confident in myself, and then I can help other people. It would make me happy because I could smile at customers."
