Authorities have revealed a number of firefighters were treated in hospital for headaches and high heart rates after battling the Derrimut chemical fire.

A number of firefighters needed hospital treatment after the massive chemical explosion and fire at Derrimut , in Melbourne's west. FRV , Victoria Police and Worksafe are continuing to interview people to try to work out what caused the explosion.

More than 180 firefighters from Fire Rescue Victoria , the Country Fire Authority and aviation firefighters responded on Wednesday to one of the state's biggest fires in recent years. Those warnings have now been removed but Melbourne Water and the Environment Protection Authority continue a major clean-up and monitoring operation in Laverton Creek and Cherry Creek, which have been affected by firewater run-off.Deputy Commissioner Joshua Fischer said some firefighters had presented to hospitals since Wednesday for observation and tests.

Officers from the EPA and Melbourne Water were continuing monitoring operations in surrounding suburbs.The EPA's Western Metropolitan Melbourne regional manager, Steve Lansdell, said water sensors were providing real-time monitoring in Laverton Creek, Kayes Drain, Cherry Creek and the popular Cherry Lake, in the coastal wetlands of Altona.The EPA's Steve Lansdell says there hasn't been any sign of wildlife being affected by firewater run-off.

WorkSafe's investigation into that death was continuing, but investigators had visited the factory 24 times since, issuing seven compliance notices.
