Sketches of rugs by Charlotte Perriand for French ski resort Les Arcs were not discovered for decades. Now they are being brought to life.
Examples of Perriand’s colour mastery in the new cc-tapis rugs.
As for the floor coverings, Perriand designed them to furnish her largest architectural project, Les Arcs ski resort in the French Alps. She’d begun work on the mega-resort in the late 1960s, devising what is effectively an architectural topography of buildings that hug the slopes, the 1000-plus bedrooms all but disappearing into the alpine setting.
Secondly, while the European modernists were widely believed to adhere to a reduced primary colour palette of red, blue and yellow plus black, white and grey, Perriand’s mastery of colour was much more nuanced, and inspired by nature over industry: Acanthe , Aigue Marine , Abeille , Azalee . Inspired by industrial production – and particularly the newfangled motor vehicles appearing on the streets of Paris, she decided she wanted to work alongside Le Corbusier. After he saw her chrome and stainless steel “bar under the eaves” at the Autumn Salon, Corbu invited her to join his crack team, specifically to design the “equipement d’habitation” – the chrome and steel furniture with which to fit out his “machines for living in”.
