The distinctive jacket worn by Bob Hawke when he celebrated Australia's upset win of the America's Cup in 1983 was, in fact, designed by a 23-year-old architecture student to parody nationalistic fervour.
While it was remembered as a time of wild celebration, he said for much of the night Australia was behind in the race and the mood was subdued. But Mr Burnham stayed on. His jacket had afforded him special access, despite not being a member of club."I went into the side door of the media room, and I swapped jackets with some official," Mr Burnham said. The prime minister arrives
"Everyone knew that Bob Hawke was in town and there was an anticipation that he would turn up," Mr Burnham said. "I took it off, passed it to him. It went to someone else and then went to Bob Hawke, and he put it on straight away," he said. Mr Burnham was prepared to let it go but his mother was not, and contacted the premier's office to insist that it was returned. The jacket was not considered a big deal at the time, Mr Burnham said, but it had since assumed a significant place in the celebrations around that 1983 victory, and a number of replicas had been made.
