Michael Gove may have been reinstalled at the Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities (DLUHC) but private renters desperately need help. They, quite literally, can’t afford to wait
Half of people facing homelessness have experienced five or more traumas, such as sexual or domestic abuse, violence, family death or war. This is Home Front with Vicky Spratt, a subscriber-only newsletter from i. If you’d like to get this direct to your inbox, every single week,As order is slowly restored in Westminster after weeks of frankly chaotic governance from the Conservative Party, the housing crisis continues to worsen.
It’s almost impossible to overstate how desperate this situation is. An eviction, like a rent hike, is enough to plunge anyone into anxiety and serious hardship. Not to mention that fact that for those renters with families, it can be the difference between being able to live near schools and support networks and being torn away from them.
It’s true that there is nowhere near enough noise being made about the plight of private renters, but this is not a zero-sum game. While heads roll and revolving doors spin in Westminster, the desperate need for a truly 360-degree and, crucially, long-term strategy for repairing housing security and affordability in this country only gets more and more extreme.Speaking of support for homeowners who could be pulled into poverty by rising rates, London’s City Hall has a plan and they’d like the Government to pick it up.
His office argues that because inflation is at a 40-year high and interest rates are being raised to the highest level for 14 years, there is a need for proportionate action to protect Londoners from potential homelessness. It’s a bold plan and one that would certainly be controversial, given that aspects involve the Government propping up the housing market. But, it is a plan that would certainly help people and prevent repossessions.
On top of that, half of people facing homelessness have experienced five or more traumas, such as sexual or domestic abuse, violence, family death or war. Christina, a charity worker, is one of 28 households in a private rented block of apartments at Walthamstow Stadium who potentially face being made homeless this winter by their landlord – the housing association L&Q.
“But, in a sudden U-turn, the residents of Goodwood house were told over the phone by L&Q that they had just two months to move out. We were in shock. It meant that families and vulnerable residents would be homeless just before Christmas,” she added.Among the Goodwood residents, there are many young families with babies and 20 children in local schools and others who are disabled or critically ill.
“I am very upset,” she adds, “[the uncertainty] has plunged me into a deep depression. Not knowing what is going to happen and where I am going to go…”
