Authorities are searching for the body of a 28-year-old surfer who was attacked by a shark at Granites Beach in South Australia.

A desperate search is underway for a South Australian surfer who is believed to be the victim of a fatal shark attack on Thursday evening. Just after 7pm on Thursday, a 28-year-old man from the Eyre Peninsula city Port Lincoln was surfing at Granites Beach, located about 30km south-west of Streaky Bay. Local police immediately rushed to the scene and began a search alongside the State Emergency Service and local volunteers.

Local authorities are scouring the area at and around Granites Beach after reports of the surfer being attacked by a shark. As of about 6.30am Friday, the man’s body is yet to be found and authorities will continue to scour the area for the surfer. South Australia Police noted Granites Beach remains closed to the public and have called on witnesses to provide details to local police. Senior Constable Rebecca Stokes said a witness rushed out to the waters on a jetski after the reported attack and grabbed the surfboard. 'There was just no sign of this young man, there's just been no sign of him,' she said, according to the ABC.'From what I understand of the terrain and the surf there, it is known to be frequented by sharks.' Dr Brianna Le Busque, a shark researcher from the University of South Australia, said the man was likely attacked by a white shark. '(White sharks) are definitely more active in summer (because) there's more people in the ocean in summer so it is more likely there are unfortunate bites that occur,' Ms Le Busque told Sky News. While this incident would mark the first fatal shark attack in South Australia this summer, Ms Le Busque noted there were three over the 2023-24 summer. 'We had a cluster that occurred in South Australia where unfortunately three people died, but for this summer this is the first one we've had,' she said
