The man who died after being shot as he walked along a street near a busy nightlife area in Melbourne's south on Friday night has been named, as police revealed details of what happened leading up to and after the 'targeted' drive-by shooting.
Emergency services were called to Almeida Crescent in South Yarra, close to the popular nightlife spot of Chapel St, about 11:40pm on Friday after reports of a shooting.
Police Crime Command Detective Superintendent Geri Porter said the investigation was in its early stages but noted it was likely a"targeted" drive-by attack. Det Supt Porter said there were associations to organised crime but it was too early to determine if there is a connection to the South Yarra incident.
"Detectives are still working to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident however at this early stage the incident appears to be targeted," police said. The crime scene is situated outside the ILK apartments, with some of those residents hearing"at least six to ten rounds" being fired.
