From West Campus to UTSA to the Spurs, Devin Brown boasts a San Antonio sports legacy like few others
Inductees to the Class of 2023 San Antonio Sports Hall of Fame were announced at the Alamodome during a press conference on Tuesday, Dec. 6, 2022. The new inductees are : Churchill High School volleyball coach Wanda Bingham, tennis athlete and Trinity coach Emilie Burrer Foster, UTSA basketball and San Antonio Spurs’ Devin Brown, 2020 Olympic Track & Field coach Rose Monday and local PGA golfer Jimmy Walker . The induction ceremony will be held on May 13, 2023.
After a few false starts, Brown -- a 6-foot-5 guard --parlayed that initial training camp invitation from the Spurs into a full-time gig, eventually filling a backup role on the team’s 2005 NBA championship squad. After Saturday's enshrinement ceremony at the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center – which will also honor six-time PGA tour winner Jimmy Walker, 2020 Olympic track and field coach Rose Monday, former Trinity women’s tennis coach Emilie Burrer Foster and former Churchill volleyball coach Wanda Bingham -- there will be a total of 134 men and women represented in the San Antonio Sports Hall.Born in Ogden, Utah in December of 1978, Brown’s family moved to San Antonio when he was six months old.
Had that been the end of Brown’s basketball resume, he still would have been a shoo-in for the San Antonio Sports Hall of Fame. “I remember David Robinson saying, ‘How you doing? It’s a nice career you’re having,’ ” Brown recalled. “I’m like, ‘How does he even know me?’ ”
