Australia's Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade says it has not had any contact with Syria n officials about the return of a group of Australian women and children with links to the Islamic State terrorist group.was the "deciding factor"The official said the Australian government was responsible for the delay, and the Syria n government had to wait until Australia had "put procedures in place" to receive the women.
Thirteen women and children linked to IS fighters are expected to land in Australia today after spending almost seven years in a Syrian detention camp. But a DFAT spokesperson said its officials were not involved in those discussions.
"DFAT officials have not had any contact with Syrian officials about Australian women and children," the spokesperson said. The Syrian government has repeatedly claimed the Australian government had been holding up the group's return to Australia. Yesterday, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said his government had "not provided any assistance, nor were we involved in those actions of the Syrian government". Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke said the government's position had been "completely unchanged the entire way through this".
He also said there were "very serious limits" on what the government could do to prevent an Australian citizen from returning.
