Politicians regularly trade blows about ambulance ramping, elective surgery waiting lists, and maternity care. But little is being debated about preventative health.

Jack Petrou has watched from the sidelines as his father lost toes on both feet to the ravages of type 2 diabetes.

The clinic is a partnership between Health and Wellbeing Queensland and UQ Health Care, a not-for-profit organisation owned by the University of Queensland.Health and Wellbeing Queensland was established by the state government five years ago to improve Queenslanders' health and reduce health inequities.

And yet the consequences of ignoring preventative healthcare are dire, both economically and individually. "Obesity among Queensland children would need to halve to restore life expectancy to that enjoyed by earlier generations," Dr Littlewood says. "The most important thing that we can possibly do to set them up well is to ensure that they have a healthy weight so that they can get stuck into life without any sort of barriers."

"For me, the most important thing is to set up a health system … based on keeping us well, based on keeping us healthy and away from hospitals.
