Big oil is attempting to get the ruptured pipelines that caused the 2015 Refugio Beach oil spill on the Central Coast back up and running again. Locals are not happy about it.

, the valves are a requirement of Assembly Bill 864 which “requires pipeline operators to install Best Available Technology on existing pipelines in the Coastal Zone to reduce the volume of a potential release.”

“We’ve got a pipeline that’s basically Swiss cheese and ripe for additional new leaks,” he said. “So they put in new valves which may control these leaks we know are going to be coming? Seems silly to put this back into production right now with a really poorly designed project.” And that decision would be going forward “with a number of statutory and categorical [California Environmental Quality Act] regulations they wouldn’t have to go through,” Schmitt said. “They’re doing it without environmental review, and it pisses me off.”

Krop said her organization’s interests are not aimed at the valve install specifically, rather in restricting “building or restarting of a new pipeline,” but said she’ll be “watching closely” March 1.
