Hayley Van Hostauyen was 14 weeks pregnant with her daughter Sage when she was diagnosed with chronic kidney disease, and now spends 20 hours a week on dialysis.

Kidney Health Australia has conducted a study of current and former dialysis patients, finding 92 per cent of respondents reported the treatment disrupted their lives.

Chris Forbes concedes the goal is a "bold ambition", but says dialysis could be phased out by focusing on improved detection, diagnosis and management of people who are at the early stages of kidney disease."We have new medications that, combined with lifestyle interventions, have been shown to slow or even stop the progression to kidney failure.

Kidney Health Australia estimates there are 1.8 million Australians living with undiagnosed kidney disease. struggles accessing dialysis are even more pronounced, with some residents forced to travel hundreds of kilometres to receive multiple treatments per week"In central Australia, we now have the highest recorded rates of treated kidney failure in the world."
