Brandon Pfaadt is a rookie who was tabbed as the starting pitcher for Game 7 of the National League Championship Series, so surely, his nerves were running high.
Before he took the mound for the biggest game of his life, Brandon Pfaadt went back to his roots. The rookie was tabbed as the Arizona Diamondbacks' starting pitcher for Game 7 of the National League Championship Series on Tuesday night, so no one can blame him for being nervous. So, in order to slow his heart beat down, he did some reading in the dugout right before he toed the rubber at Citizens Bank Park.
Pfaadt appeared to be reading the Bible just before the bottom of the first inning. The 25-year-old attended Trinity High School, a Catholic all-boys school located in the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Louisville. He then played college baseball at the private Catholic school, Bellarmine University, also in Louisville. The D-Backs took him in the fifth round of the 2020 MLB Draft, and he made his debut on May 3 of this year. He pitched to a measly 5.
The Phillies won the first two games of the series at their home ballpark, but the D-Backs then took two straight at Chase Field. Philadelphia won Game 5, but Arizona staved off elimination in Game 6 to force Tuesday night's win-or-go-home contest. The winner of Game 7 will face the Texas Rangers in the World Series. If Arizona wins, it will be their first appearance in the Fall Classic since winning it in 2001; they would stop the Phillies from earning back-to-back pennants.
At the time of publishing, the Diamondbacks led 3-2 in the bottom of the fifth.
