The team will make a decision on whether he is available to play on the field during pregame workouts. If Gurriel is not available to play in the field, Josh Rojas would serve as the emergency option, moving into left field. Rojas started 39 games in the outfield in 2021 before the team had him exclusively focus on serving as an infielder. That outcome nearly transpired Tuesday, when Corbin Carroll was hit in the hand with a pitch and tended to by trainers. Carroll, though, remained in the game and is in the lineup in left field Wednesday.
Manager Torey Lovullo added that there is a “minimal” chance that Gurriel will return to the lineup for Thursday’s series finale. Lovullo wants Gurriel to come off the bench before he returns to the lineup. In two starts since returning from the injured list, Davies has been his typical self: Unspectacular but a steady presence in the middle of the rotation. After building his workload back up in his first appearance, he threw 96 pitches in 5 2/3 innings last time out against the Rockies. He allowed three runs, struck out four and walked one in that outing. … In 2021 and 2022, Corbin was one of the worst pitchers in baseball. Over that span, he had a 15-35 record with a 6.02 ERA.
