Monthly testing is done on the alert system, as required by FEMA, according to Dauphin County spokesman Brett Hambright.
In the midst of a serious situation where an armed man was threatening detectives, some Dauphin County residents were sent concerning alerts to shelter-in-place, despite being miles away.
In a Susquehanna Township community Facebook group, one person mentioned the alert to see what people knew about the situation. “We are working with PEMA, FEMA , as well as software provider, Everbridge, to identify why the alert went to folks outside of the targeted area,” Hambright said. The alerts are something residents can opt into through a setting on their cell phones, which is supposed to let them know if something is going on in the immediate area surrounding an incident, Hambright said.
