Crews including the Harrisburg Bureau of Fire assisted with the cleanup.
A diesel leak occurred on Norfolk Southern property in Harrisburg and was related to a storage tank.A minor diesel spill occurred last week at a Norfolk Southern storage tank in Harrisburg.
Harrisburg City spokesman Matt Maisel confirmed the leak happened around 11:30 a.m. June 8 and was linked to a tank located right off Industrial Road. He said Harrisburg Bureau of Fire responded and conducted preventative measures including cleaning stormwater inlets. The PA Department of Environmental Protection and a hazmat company took over the scene by 12:30 p.m., Maisel said. Additionally, he said Capital Region Water and Norfolk Southern also responded to the cleanup and containment.
Norfolk Southern spokesman Connor Spielmaker said their crews immediately responded to identify and contain the source and discovered the leak was caused by a broken valve on a storage tank. “We appreciate their fast response. We promptly notified state agencies, and began flushing and vacuuming any affected areas. Most of those spots were cleaned up Thursday. We’re working closely with state officials, and our personnel and contractors remain on-site,” he said.At no time, Maisel said, was Wildwood Park impacted by the incident. If you purchase a product or register for an account through one of the links on our site, we may receive compensation.
